Non-representational art is of great interest to me because it makes people think. Everyone sees things differently as shapes and colors bring to mind various ideas and moods. A successful painting to me is made by a process that jazz musicians refer to as "catching a ride"- improvising a composition that makes sense and seems right without a rigid plan of development. When in this state, an artist feels a freedom that is rarely possible to achieve by other means. The thoughts and feelings of a receptive viewer should be affected in a similar manner, if the artist's mission is accomplished.
